BIRD COUNT REPORT
by Dianne John

Last year Picton Dawn Chorus and Kaipūpū Sanctuary commissioned a report on how our local bird numbers are trending. KP data has been collected for 10 years and PDC data for 6 years. This data has been collected by our annual 5 minute bird counts.

This work has been done by volunteers, for which we are indebted as without the team the job would not have been done.

We are proud of this work as many other organisations do not do these counts from the onset of their projects. We are also unique in that we are able to make comparisons between Urban, bush and sanctuary habitiats.

Our numbers are all trending in the right directions with endemic/native birds increasing and some introduced species decreasing as endemics take over. The numbers should continue to increase if we can improve the habitat in the whole region, to produce more food sources for the endemic birds like Tui, Korimako, Kereru and Riroriro.

Planting trees and flaxes will help with this as will reducing the weed species to allow the native plants to thrive.

CMEA AWARDS JUDGES REPORT

These are held every two years to showcase businesses or community projects that are good for the environment. PDC has previously won the Landscape and Habitat category and this year we have been selected for the Community Innovation category.

Part of the process is a meet and greet with the judges who write a report and provide guidance for each projects future. It is a very humbling read and we are thankful for their recognition of our work.

Thank you to all our Volunteers you should all be so proud of your involvement with PDC.
